From the moment the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, was put into my hands and I began to glimpse the truth, my life changed. There was no sudden upheaval, but bit by bit, as I put into practice what I was understanding of God and man, a changed conception of myself and the world around me began to take place.

For some years I had suffered from stomach ulcers and had already undergone an operation for perforation of the stomach. My life was in such turmoil at that time that soon I was too ill to attend my office, and my firm insisted I should see a specialist. The doctor told me I had little hope of ever being free from the condition and that I would be wise to retire from business and lead the careful life of a semi-invalid.

I was utterly downcast, sick and weary of the struggle. As I walked back to my office from the hospital, these thoughts came to me with sudden, tremendous impact: "What are you doing? You are believing and accepting what you have been told by the hospital, whereas, in truth, you are the reflection of the divine Mind, perfect, whole, and unassailable. 'God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good' (Gen. 1:31). You are part of that perfect creation. All you have to do is accept it and be joyously grateful."
