Signs of the Times

Dr. Albert V. Danielsen
Associate Founder and Trustee of Boston University in an address given in Florida

A man has many options in life. There seem to be a thousand roads to travel. Actually there are but two, the high road and the low road. The high road is the road of God. The low road is the road of self, and so we rightly use the word "selfish" to describe this road. This may be seen in another way: "Whosoever would save his (higher) life must lose his(lower) life." Even when men cannot define the Creator, if they choose they can follow the unselfish design for living, but if we want to travel on the high road, our purpose in life has to be to give, to be kind and to serve, instead of to get, to keep and to indulge ....

Underneath the whole purpose of commitment is the central intent to deny self. This to both Jesus and the prophets was the positive practice of giving oneself to God and to helping people in need....I have tried to spiritualize the conception of success and riches, and to put prosperity and money in their proper and secondary place; wisely using all my gifts, such as they are, answering each moment as best I can to the call for excellence and leaving the outcome for God's correction and completion.
