Regeneration Is the Remarkable Thing

Every healing published in the Christian Science periodicals has been carefully authenticated. These healings, brought about by the application of the teachings of Christian Science, often take place when all hope has been given up. To a material world faltering in its faith, these healings may seem very remarkable. But the truly remarkable thing about them is that they have taken place as the result of regeneration of thought.

Regeneration is spiritual rebirth or conversion. It is renewal and reformation. Jesus' mission was to elevate the individual, to show him the path of regeneration. When Jesus told Nicodemus, "Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God," John 3:3; Nicodemus did not understand that Jesus was talking about regeneration of thought. No simple solution to the problem of being was offered to Nicodemus, and no simple solution awaits mankind today. It is not easy to resist and overcome the pressures of an age that turns to drugs for solutions and looks for freedom in escape. It is not easy to love in the face of hate, to prove justice in the face of bigotry and cruelty, but through regeneration of thought we are able to do it.

When asked the meaning of regeneration, Mrs. Eddy says, "It is the appearing of divine law to human understanding; the spiritualization that comes from spiritual sense in contradistinction to the testimony of the so-called material senses." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 73; The appearing of this divine law is all that is needed to solve any problem that confronts mankind. Fear, disease, hatred, lack, are the results of erroneous thinking; and through divine law human consciousness can be regenerated to reject the limited, inharmonious concept of things.
