Importance of Testimony Meetings

There is nothing that Satan dislikes more than spiritual healing. This is understandable when we realize that healing is the actual destruction of the carnal, or mortal, mind. Healing spells the eventual end of evil, which includes not only sin but poverty, sickness, human discord, and every kind of distress. No human cure, physical, economic, or social, can compare with the effect of spiritual healing, which regenerates human character.

One way Satan works to resist healing by Christian Science, the Science that defines Satan as a falsifier and an illusion, is to curtail attendance at Wednesday testimony meetings. A subtle suggestion creeps into the thought of the student of Science that he should skip the meeting. Seemingly convincing reasons may show up: too tired after a hard day; personal duties need attention; it is raining; some enticing entertainment is more attractive, more important. If a suggestion is not detected for what it is—resistance to healing—it may go unchallenged, and the thrust of spiritual freedom will be weakened.

Such resistance may not stem from sources outside the student so much as it may be lurking within him. There is some unhandled materialism in his own mentality that needs to be broken down if he is to recognize fully the importance of a testimony meeting. Here he comes face to face with the recording of divine power so neglected by spiritually blind mortals spread over the globe. Here he has the opportunity to add to that recording some convincing account of God's compassion in his own experience. Or he may take to the meeting only his grateful support of the evidence given that God is a living presence, omnipotent Principle, the impartial governor of all.
