I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing but...
I did not come into Christian Science for physical healing but because of a deep hunger to find God. I had not attended a church service in sixteen years, because for me it held no meaning. But Christian Science changed that. It opened wide the whole wonderful concept of God. Christian Science proved to me that there really is a God who loves each and every one of us, and I ate up all that I could read and grasp of Christian Science.
A healing which stands out to me is one which took place about twenty years ago while I was living in the northern United States. In the spring swarms of black flies would appear. These flies had a bite which was poisonous to me, and swelling would result. The Bible quotation "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good"(Gen. 1:31) helped me realize that God did not make poisonous ideas, that everything He made must be good.
I had a large garden. As I worked, pulling weeds, I would mentally discard wrong suggestions, which seemed to grow like weeds in mortal mind. After two weeks of diligent daily prayer the healing came. As I finished the Bible Lesson one morning, I had the conviction that the healing was manifested. And it was! Though I lived in that locale for several more years, I was never again bothered by such flies.
A more recent healing was that of my daughter. While she was in college last summer, she began having trouble with her eyes. She tried to reach a Christian Science practitioner but was not successful. So she prayed to know that perception is a quality of God and cannot be impaired. Her roommates persuaded her to go to the college infirmary, as they were becoming very alarmed about her condition. She was given a blood test, and the diagnosis was that she had mononucleosis. Since this was a Thursday afternoon, she made plans to come home the next day. When she reached home, she called a practitioner. With this help, she was able to return to school after being out of school only two days. She was completely healed within a week.
The second testimony in the April, 1967, issue of The Christian Science Journal was a great help in solving this problem. Using the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation by Mrs. Eddy as the testimony recommended, she realized the deep import of the lines(Science and Health, p. 17):
"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil;
And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth
us from sin, disease, and death."
She also saw the significance of Christ Jesus' teaching and example and endeavored to keep her thought on God. "If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light"(Matt. 6:22). Using this knowledge, she returned to school and finished the term with a "B" average.
I am grateful for Christian Science because it is always here, instantly available. Class instruction, the annual association meeting, and membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church have brought me untold blessings.
