About 1906 my grandmother became interested in Christian Science...

About 1906 my grandmother became interested in Christian Science in an effort to help my mother, who was suffering from the aftereffects of typhoid fever and a nervous breakdown. A complete healing followed, and my parents became students of this Science.

I attended the Sunday School from an early age, and we depended on Christian Science healing for the very few childhood ills that I had. Unfortunately I did not really appreciate this great good but accepted my healings and freedom from ills as a matter of course. During my school and college days I completely drifted away from any study or application of this truth.

About fifteen years ago I began to feel that the smoking habit was injurious to me, as I was consuming over two packs of cigarettes a day. I tried many ways to stop smoking through human willpower, but this only led to a greater desire to smoke. One day while glancing at a directory in an office building, I noticed the listing of a Christian Science practitioner and suddenly decided to make his acquaintance and ask for help with the smoking problem. His reply was, "If you sincerely mean what you say about wanting to quit smoking, you are healed now." I had an instantaneous healing at that moment and never again had the slightest desire for any kind of tobacco.

My gratitude for this outstanding proof of the efficacy of Christian Science Knew no bounds. I gave up social drinking, started attending church again, and soon joined The Mother Church and a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. A few years later the way opened for me to have the wonderful experience of class instruction.

The proofs we have had of God's care for His spiritual idea, man are more numerous than can be recounted. I can confirm with complete conviction the absolute truth of the first sentence in the Preface of Science and Health, where Mrs. Eddy states, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." Protection while traveling has been especially outstanding. On one trip, while in a gas station, the attendant asked whether we had heard the tornado alert on the car radio. As we had not, he informed us that it was approaching the area into which we were driving and that the estimated timing seemed to place it as crossing our path fifteen miles ahead. We considered staying where we were, but since there was no cover there we decided to go ahead, knowing that we were constantly in God's protecting care.

After we had driven about twelve miles, the sky became very black. The intensity of the wind increased considerably, but in a few minutes we saw a low, wide overhead railroad bridge with ample space to park under it well off the pavement. During the fifteen minutes or so that we stayed there, the storm passed, carrying with it much debris in the air. We thanked God for this additional proof of the omnipresence of Mind and continued on a happy and harmonious trip.

Recently I had a very quick healing of what appeared to be food poisoning. We were on a ship at sea, and the condition had been getting worse over a period of about three days. I started to give some consideration to leaving the vessel at the next port in order to fly home. Then it came to me that this would be giving in to a lie of mortal sense. Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health (p. 167): "The scientific government of the body must be attained through the divine Mind. It is impossible to gain control over the body in any other way. On this fundamental point, timid conservatism is absolutely inadmissible. Only through radical reliance on Truth can scientific healing power be realized." I cabled a Christian Science practitioner, and at the same hour the cable was delivered the condition was immediately healed.

It would be impossible to express my gratitude fully in words for Christian Science, for Christ Jesus, who showed us all the way of salvation, for Mrs. Eddy for giving us this wonderful and workable truth, and for the practitioners and their dedicated work.

I can attest to the healings my husband mentioned and to the protection we have experienced. I am most grateful for these proofs of God's love.
