About 1906 my grandmother became interested in Christian Science in an effort to help my mother, who was suffering from the aftereffects of typhoid fever and a nervous breakdown. A complete healing followed, and my parents became students of this Science.
I attended the Sunday School from an early age, and we depended on Christian Science healing for the very few childhood ills that I had. Unfortunately I did not really appreciate this great good but accepted my healings and freedom from ills as a matter of course. During my school and college days I completely drifted away from any study or application of this truth.
About fifteen years ago I began to feel that the smoking habit was injurious to me, as I was consuming over two packs of cigarettes a day. I tried many ways to stop smoking through human willpower, but this only led to a greater desire to smoke. One day while glancing at a directory in an office building, I noticed the listing of a Christian Science practitioner and suddenly decided to make his acquaintance and ask for help with the smoking problem. His reply was, "If you sincerely mean what you say about wanting to quit smoking, you are healed now." I had an instantaneous healing at that moment and never again had the slightest desire for any kind of tobacco.
