When I was a boy nine years of age, my family lived in a house where the water was heated by coiled pipes in a coal furnace. During one particularly cold day the pipes began to pound from excessive steam pressure, and my mother asked me to go down into the basement and release the excessive hot water and steam generated by the furnace into a laundry tray. I ran downstairs to turn on the very hot faucet, not noticing there was a length of hose attached to it. Almost instantly I was sprayed from head to foot with hot water and superheated steam mixed with coal dust.
I ran upstairs and immediately my mother and I, began to apply truths of God and man we had learned in Christian Science. My training in the Christian Science Sunday School provided good support. In a few minutes the intense pain left, never to return. Shortly thereafter, realizing the seriousness of the scald, we asked a Christian Science practitioner to aid in the healing work by supporting our understanding that man's perfection is outside the reach of error's illusionary laws.
Two days later an insurance adjuster unexpectedly called at our home to conduct some business not related to the accident. I am sure he meant well; however, apparently to prepare my mother for what he felt was realism, he reminded her that according to generally accepted medical law with which he was familiar, one so severely burned as I could not possibly live. He suggested that if I did live I would be an offense to society because of the scars. Even in the face of these material suggestions, I knew, with childlike trust, that Christian Science healed, and I was absolutely convinced that it would heal me.
