Christian Science Church Center PROGRESS REPORT No. 18

A fresh perspective of the original edifice of The Mother Church will come with the construction of the new Colonnade Building. At present the south end of the Publishing House hides in part the Falmouth Street view of the handsome Romanesque tower of the Original Church. For this reason and for several others, some 30 feet of the south end of the Publishing House must be removed before the Colonnade Building can be attached to it.

The result will be that the Colonnade Building will stand 10 feet back from the present building line, and thus The Mother Church will have a more prominent and visible role in the arrangement of buildings in the Church Center.

Without this change, someone standing in front of the Colonnade Building would look down its long front and past the Church. And with the Church thus recessed, the eye would not find a stopping place. The change, however, will allow the eye to sweep down the front of the Colonnade Building, with its flowing statement of vertical columns, until it reaches the unique and striking Mother Church.
