The Power of Scientific Thought

Mrs. Eddy writes, "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases." Rudimental Divine Science, p. 9; This statement surely gives one a glimpse of the power of thought and awakens one to the fact that what he thinks moment by moment is of utmost importance, not only to himself but to all mankind.

In one of his Epistles the Apostle Paul admonished, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." Phil. 2:5; Obviously Paul realized that the kind of thinking Jesus did had its source in divine Mind; it was wholly good and desirable and to be striven for. It was clear that the Christ-spirit the Master entertained was responsible for his wonderful healing and teaching.

One outstanding example of the spiritual power of the Master's luminous thought was the healing of the woman who had an issue of blood (see Mark 5: 25-34). This remarkable event took place when Jesus was going forth in response to a call to heal the daughter of Jairus, a presiding officer of the synagogue. Jesus was unaware of the woman's personal presence or her physical difficulty, yet his pure consciousness discerned her call for help and met her human need. Mrs. Eddy writes regarding this experience: "When Jesus turned and said, 'Who hath touched me?' he must have felt the influence of the woman's thought; for it is written that he felt that 'virtue had gone out of him.' His pure consciousness was discriminating, and rendered this infallible verdict; but he neither held her error by affinity nor by infirmity, for it was detected and dismissed." Unity of Good, p. 57; Elsewhere in the Gospels are examples of multitudes that were healed when Jesus was present with them.
