"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big...

"To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." This is the first statement in the Preface of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I read it for the first time when I had just been brought home from work with the first joint of my right thumb badly crushed. Looking for something to do with all the time I now had, I remembered a book my mother had sent me as a gift. I had laid it aside until I would have more time. Now I decided to read it. It was Science and Health. I knew nothing about Christian Science and was not able to read long on account of the pain and shock caused by the injury. But after reading a few pages, I realized I must read this book through as fast as I could.

The next day, when I went back to have my thumb dressed, the nurse who had dressed it when the accident first happened removed the bandage. A puzzled frown came over her face, but she did not say anything. She just wrapped the thumb up again and told me to come back the next day. After this had gone on for several days, she told me she had been so sure when she first saw the thumb that it would have to be amputated that she had taken no pains with it and had used no medication. Now, she said, it looked as if we might save it, but it would be at least ten weeks before I would be able to go back to work.

It developed that I was released for work in seven weeks; but not until years later, when I began to attend Wednesday evening testimony meetings, did I realize that my first reading of the textbook had saved my thumb. When I went back to work, I continued to read Science and Health and also the Sentinel; and later on I learned to study the Lesson-Sermons from the Christian Science Quarterly. As I went on with my reading and study, the desire to know more about God as revealed in this very practical religion grew stronger.
