Those of us who do not readily become disciples of Christ are brought ...
Those of us who do not readily become disciples of Christ are brought around sooner or later through discipline. The Bible says (Hebr. 12:6), "For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth." Although I was raised in a Christian Science Sunday School, it wasn't until symptoms of a disease developed for which material medicine had no answer that I turned wholeheartedly to studying the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. After receiving treatment once from an experienced Christian Scientist, I carried on the prayerful work myself, as the fear had been dispelled. It was many months before all symptoms disappeared, but the healing was completed, and I was on my way, though slowly, to becoming a sincere student of this Science.
Years later, after I married and was raising a family, and trying to live Christian Science while learning it, membership in The Mother Church seemed to be a most desirable forward step, but it was difficult for me to give up the use of headache pills. I suffered periodic attacks of sick headaches. For months the application for membership lay around unsigned. Then one day during a particularly acute attack, I decided to take my stand and put into practice what I had been learning of the power of prayer to meet this situation.
After studying a few minutes I realized that selfish motives and self-will concerning the evening's activities were the errors that needed to be eradicated. Following this uncovering my freedom from the attack was immediate. I saw that my real desire was to bless those with whom we were to spend the evening. We had a most enjoyable time helping others enjoy themselves. That was the end of the attacks; but best of all, I learned the importance of searching my motives in the light of Christian Science and correcting them when they were found wanting. It gave me a great sense of joy to complete the application to join The Mother Church, knowing I had found the "pearl of great price" (Matt. 13:46) and was learning to use it.
