Signs of the Times
The Rev. R. Lawrence Jones, M. A. in the Express and Star Wolverhampton, Staffs., England
Remembrance Day [Veterans Day] should become one of dedication to lifting the life of the world, and to ideals which already fire the imagination of our best young people. The backward-looking word Remembrance needs linking with positive forward-looking words Right remembrance of the self-sacrifice and suffering of the past means commitment to the battle against greed, oppression and hate, and to loyalty at all costs to brotherhood, truth and peace.
The one inclusive cause that can give us faith in life and power to live it well is, I believe, the cause of God, so interpreted as to claim for every life and all living an eternal worth and significance. This means nothing less than loving all in life worthy of being loved: all love, all courage, all comradeship, all fidelity, all truth, all goodness and integrity. It means enlistment in the truly holy war on enmity and want, and on all the evils that dishonour God and disable man. It means becoming "soldiers," who alleviate misery and mistrust, not create them.
