On Buying and Selling

Almost everyone, at some time, buys and sells something of substantial value. Some may do so daily or even hourly. Regardless of the frequency of these dealings, it is always wise to pray over a transaction before arranging the details to accomplish the intended result. In praying according to the teachings of Christian Science, one must understand the transaction from a spiritual point of view and let reasoning be based on spiritual values. As Mrs. Eddy states, "For right reasoning there should be but one fact before the thought, namely, spiritual existence."^{ Science and Health, p. 492;}

Spiritual existence is a realm apart from material existence; it is comprised of spiritual ideas rather than of material things. It is the true creation, wherein man is made in the image and likeness of God, that is, spiritually, not materially. It is the truth of being, in which this man of God's creating is complete and harmonious in every respect and dependent only on his creator.

In this spiritual creation man is deprived of nothing, lacks nothing, and does not have to get things to better his existence, as often seems to be the case in the material world. Nor does this man of God's creation have any sense of excess so that he must rid himself of a portion of his possessions. And it follows that since all God's ideas reflect only His qualities and characteristics, there is, in this real, spiritual universe, no dishonesty, greed, envy, unfair competition, fraud, or deceit.
