Words of Current Interest

The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the CHRISTIAN SCIENCE QUARTERLY designated to be read in Christian Science churches on November 3, 1968.

When Ephraim spake trembling, he exalted himself in Israel; but when he offended in Baal, he died (Hos. 13:1)

The opening clause of this verse might be viewed as implying that Ephraim's "trembling" suggested "humility" resulting in his "exaltation." But many scholars contend that, strictly, the trembling was not that of Ephraim but of those impressed by his authority. For example, Moffatt has, "Whenever Ephraim spoke, men were in awe; he was a prince in Israel." Ephraim and Israel were sometimes used synonymously; and when they or their people turned openly to worshiping the pagan god Baal, doom awaited them.

Fathers of our flesh (Hebr. 12:9)
