One day I began to experience severe pain in my eyes

One day I began to experience severe pain in my eyes. I had difficulty in focusing them, and any light seemed to cause pain. I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner, who worked steadily during the following days and nights.

My wife lovingly read from the Bible and from the writings of Mary Baker Eddy. We were grateful to have recordings of several chapters from Science and Health. One night, when the pain seemed most intense, we stacked as many records as we could on the record player and listened quietly. One passage in particular stood out to me, and I returned to it several times during the next few days. It is from page 472, where Mrs. Eddy says: "All reality is in God and His creation, harmonious and eternal. That which He creates is good, and He makes all that is made. Therefore the only reality of sin, sickness, or death is the awful fact that unrealities seem real to human, erring belief, until God strips off their disguise."

After two weeks there was so much consternation from my parents, friends, and co-workers, who are not Christian Scientists, about the lack of medical attention and my becoming blind, as they feared, that I was determined to return to work to quiet their fears. This I did, although I still felt headaches and my vision seemed blurred.
