When I was about thirteen years old, I began to suffer from synovitis in one instep. Every winter for years afterward my foot would become inflamed and swollen on the instep. Also, bunions were appearing on my feet.

Some time after taking up Christian Science, I saw a practitioner with regard to these conditions. She recommended that I go home and repeat slowly, line by line, the Lord's Prayer and the spiritual interpretation of it given by Mrs. Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health. That night I was alone in the house sitting before the fire. I remembered the practitioner's words and repeated each line with much thought until I came to the final sentences (p. 17):
