My heart is filled with gratitude for this wonderful, practical, everyday religion, Christian Science. I have always had Science to guide me through every experience, and it certainly has met my every need when its healing truths have been earnestly studied and applied. I attended the Christian Science Sunday School from the time I was three years old until I was twenty, and the truths taught me there have been the basis for my gaining a better understanding of God and of myself as His image and likeness.
While I was getting in my cross-country hours for my pilot's license, I was flying solo over the mountain range of the Oregon Cascades when the engine on the plane completely stopped. At first I was fearful, but then I realized that God was there guiding me and I could know the right things to do. A message from the Bible, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the ever-lasting arms" (Deut. 33:27), proved most helpful and quieted my fears. I was led to operate the controls that were necessary, and immediately the engine started up again and I was able to land at my destination in safety. I was very grateful for this proof of God's protecting power.
More recently, in the office where I work, I injured my thumb. The pain was quite severe, and I immediately sat down and silently declared all the truths I could think of that I had learned in Christian Science. Mrs. Eddy's statements from Science and Health that "under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection" (p. 424), and that "to those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings" (Pref., p. Vii), helped to clear my thinking. The physical picture was bad, and my employer insisted that for the protection of the company I must go to the hospital to the hospital to have a doctor examine the thumb.
