In 1962, I had a severe testing time

In 1962, I had a severe testing time. I became ill with influenza and pneumonia.

In deep humility and gratitude I wish to express my appreciation of a faithful Christian Science practitioner who stood by day and night, exercising her spiritual understanding of the fact that at no time could my true selfhood as a spiritual idea of God be touched, impaired, or discomforted by any ill. She strove to arouse me to the conscious realization of man's inseparability from his Father-Mother God, all-harmonious, the adorable One, infinite good. And being aroused, I awakened to the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 71): "Evil has no reality. It is neither person, place, nor thing, but is simply a belief, an illusion of material sense."

After this awakening I began the constructive process of eliminating from my consciousness all sense of impatience and self-condemnation. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy defines "oil" thus (p. 592): "Consecration; charity; gentleness; prayer; heavenly inspiration." The elimination of impatience and self-condemnation took effort, courage, and a determination to keep my lamp filled with oil, trimmed, and burning, but I persevered; and a complete physical healing resulted.
