I will utter dark sayings of old (Ps. 78:2)

Dummelow notes that the word translated "dark sayings" is literally "riddles," adding that "the history of Israel is an enigma, requiring an explanation such as the Psalmist gives." Moffatt renders the verse, "I open my lips in a poem on deep lessons of the past."
