BATTLE HYMN

O David, with so small a stone
You brought Goliath low!
Oh, may your courage cause us all
To run to meet the foe!
To choose our stone, washed pure and smooth
From any taint of fear—
And use our sling, the Truth upheld,
And know that God is near!

That pebble taken from the rock
On which Christ builds his Church;
That rock unmoved by storm or tide,
That Truth for which we search
Our hearts, that we may know no fear,
We choose in time of need,
Flies boldly in the giant's face
As Christ, through you, decreed.

And how could error stand or fight?
Its only weapon failed
As lion, bear and Philistine...
Your courage men soon hailed—
And still Goliath struck at you:
Saul's jealousy and doubt;
But you were wise, made straight your path,
For Christ had called you out.

Come forth, come forth, and stand you still
Upon the mountain height;
Before you goes the shepherd lad
To lead you in your fight.
Let Judah shout the Lord's command,
Let Israel smite the horde;
Come forth with staff and sling and stone
And fight you with your Lord!
