When I was a child, I thought, "Oh, how wonderful to be able to heal as Jesus healed!" During my teens I asked the minister of our orthodox church why we could not heal as Jesus did, since he plainly stated (John 14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." The minister's answer was so unsatisfactory that I do not remember it, but from that time the yearning to know God steadily grew. Many nights I lay awake weeping because I wanted so much to feel the presence of God.

After the Second World War I spent six months in bed with an infected lung, from which I subsequently recovered and returned to work. About five years later there was a recurrence of the lung infection, and at the same time arthritis developed. The attending physician said there was nothing that could be done for the type of arthritis with which I was afflicted and that I would become helplessly confined to a wheelchair.

One day, in hopeless desperation, I related my sad plight to a neighbor, who began telling me of Christian Science. Because I was familiar with the Bible, I recognized the truth as I heard it. A few days later another neighbor lent me a beautiful, matched set of the Bible together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, which I began to read avidly.
