The New Comforter
According to Isaiah the long-awaited Messiah would come "to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; ... to comfort all that mourn." Isa. 61:1,2;
That Christ Jesus recognized that this prophecy had been fulfilled in his own ministry was implicit in his tender promise that there would be another Comforter. He said, "I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever." John 14:16;
Jesus knew that the man whom God created is in no need of comforting, for he dwells in a state of unending joy and freedom as the image and likeness of his Father-Mother God. But humanity does need comforting, and the Master provided the most practical solace the world had ever known.
