At the time I entered high school, I began to attend a Christian Science...
At the time I entered high school, I began to attend a Christian Science Sunday School. How grateful I am that my parents were willing to have me do so, for Christian Science is now the way of Life for me!
When I was a senior in high school, I was expected to take a college entrance examination in chemistry in the spring. To my dismay the chemistry course was even more difficult than predicted, and I received a barely passing grade for the first marking period. It had been brought out in Sunday School that Mind, God, is the source of all intelligence, so I knew there was an answer to my problem close at hand.
I told my Sunday School teacher of the trouble, and she gave me several helpful passages to study from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. One that helped greatly is (p. 506), "Spirit, God, gathers unformed thoughts into their proper channels, and unfolds these thoughts, even as He opens the petals of a holy purpose in order that the purpose may appear." As fear was eliminated through my prayerful work and the work of my teacher, I performed better in classwork and on tests. Confusion was replaced by a sense of dominion, and my grades improved. I received my highest score on the chemistry portion of the examination, and later the college asked if I wished to do further work in the subject.
Two of our children were born at home under happy, harmonious conditions. The prayerful, metaphysical work which uplifted my thought in preparation for their births brought many blessings. A few months before our third child arrived, I injured my foot. Immediately I began reversing the suggestions that came to me, particularly those of fear. By holding to the statement (Science and Health, p. 385), "Whatever it is your duty to do, you can do without harm to yourself," I was able to fulfill my duties every day; but each evening the foot was quite swollen and uncomfortable. This continued for several weeks. I found a Bible passage that I tried to live. It is (I Cor. 13:4, 5), "Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil." As I went on with my study for the approaching birth, I became very much absorbed in the truths unfolding in my consciousness. I stopped thinking about the foot and one day realized with gratitude that the foot was completely normal and had been so for several days.
Early one evening our son, then six years old, came in crying and holding his arm. He could not move the arm without great discomfort. Immediately we talked about God's love for each of His children and declared that we are always safe and protected because "in him we live, and move, and have our being" (Acts 17:28). The boy stopped crying and prepared to go to bed without looking at the arm. As I turned wholeheartedly to God for the needed truths in the situation, this angel thought came to me from Science and Health (p. 228) : "There is no power apart from God." I knew that I must acknowledge God's omnipresence and power in every avenue of my experience. This I willingly did. The next morning our son was up, happy and ready to go out to play. By noon he was using the arm normally; all trace of the difficulty had vanished.
It is a joy to be a Christian Scientist and to have a practical religion to share with others. How grateful I am for Mrs. Eddy and her selfless love in sharing Christian Science with the world !
