Rest and Serenity
In a world of wars, strikes, and general discontent, multitudes are yearning for peace and rest. Some people are convinced that these may be secured by the accumulation of material possessions, while others long to escape to a place of seclusion where they may live in selfish ease and apathy.
The perfect example of true rest and serenity is the life of Christ Jesus, the most active, wide-awake man who ever walked the earth. For recuperation he relied more on prayer and spiritual refreshment than on hours of sleep and oblivion. Nevertheless, so aware was he of the ever-present peace and protection of his heavenly Father that he could find normal sleep even when he was in a ship that was in grave danger of capsizing in a storm. From this unsurpassed example of fearlessness and tranquillity came the remedy for true rest in his immortal words, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matt. 11:28;
To what are we invited to come and find rest? Not to the human Jesus, who is no longer present, but to the Christ, Truth, which he represented and demonstrated throughout his entire career. In the following words in Science and Health Mrs. Eddy explains the relationship between Jesus and the Christ: "The corporeal man Jesus was human. Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved that Christ is the divine idea of God—the Holy Ghost, or Comforter, revealing the divine Principle, Love, and leading into all truth." Science and Health, p. 332;
