I have had many physical and other healings in Christian Science
I have had many physical and other healings in Christian Science. But extreme pain over a prolonged period of days is a problem I had not encountered until recently.
As a young man, shortly after graduation from college, I learned of Christian Science and joined the church. Over the decades since, I have from time to time had inquirers ask me to give "a reason of the hope that is in [me]" (I Pet. 3:15). Occasionally my inquirer would say, "But what would you do if you had acute appendicitis?" This is an iffy question, and I usually answered boldly, but never until 1964 did I have such an emergency to face.
One Thursday I awoke in pain. On the commuter train, applying my thought to healing in accord with the injunction in the Manual of The Mother Church by Mary Baker Eddy for daily work, I defended myself against aggressive suggestion as we are taught to do in Christian Science. I felt fine by midday.
