Until I was eight years of age, I spent approximately one third of my life in bed with various diseases, some quite serious. The weakened condition that resulted led me to depend on medicine and dieting for my existence to the end of my college years. I was raised in a Christian home where an orthodox church and its activities played a big part in our family life. I became firmly grounded in the words of Christ Jesus, but never fully understood his works.

Three doctors, who from time to time rendered various verdicts concerning my physical condition, failed to heal me. One said I had catarrh of the stomach, one ulcers, and another tuberculosis. At the age of twenty-three I weighed only 103 pounds.

Finally I had a complete collapse while driving my car to the seashore for a Memorial Day weekend. The trip was completed by train and cab to the home of a relative, who was a Christian Scientist. A doctor was called the first day. That was the last time a doctor attended me, and the last time I took medicine. While recuperating, I was asked if I would like to read "a book." The book was Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
