Spiritual Warfare

In times of trouble the human heart yearns for peace, for health and harmony, for release from struggle. But unless this peace is properly defined, one may be lured into wrong ways of seeking his goal. Peace is much more than just lack of conflict or struggle. Real peace denotes a harmony with divine Principle, God, and only if it rests upon this basis does it have any lasting value or bring real rest.

Jesus was known as the Prince of Peace, and yet he said, "Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword." Matt. 10:34; He knew that a false peace, or conformity with error, has no true foundation. The law of harmony emanates from the creative Principle, and only when the individual conforms to the mandate of God can he find dominion and freedom.

To some people Jesus was a disturbing element; to others he was the Saviour from all evil. The egotistical, unrepentant thought found the teachings of Jesus troublesome; while the humble gained a taste of heaven. Mary Baker Eddy says: "The evil in human nature foams at the touch of good; it crieth out, 'Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, ...? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.' The Holy Spirit takes of the things of God and showeth them unto the creature; and these things of being spiritual, they disturb the carnal and destroy it; they are revolutionary, reformatory, and—now, as aforetime—they cast out evils and heal the sick." Message to The Mother Church for 1901, p. 9;
