Church Dedications
The Cornishman, June 10, 1965
Members of Christian Science Society, Penzance, will dedicate their church at Alexandra Road (Alverton end) with services held at 11.30 a.m and 6.30 p.m. on Sunday next, June 13th.
It was in 1921 that a lady residing at Gulval became interested in Christian Science as the result of being healed while reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, sent to her by her son living in Los Angeles. Her daughter soon became interested, and they were joined by someone who came to live at Newlyn. These three met together every other Sunday, and later several others, including two persons from Mousehole, joined them in holding services at Gulval. As the congregation increased, the students moved to a house in Mount Street, Penzance. Next, a photographer's studio in New Street was rented. The need for better accommodation resulted in a large upstairs room being obtained at 1, Alexandra Road in 1933, and in 1934 a Christian Science Society was formed as a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, U. S. A.
