Many years ago I heard a discussion on Christian Science. The subject in particular was God. For the first time I heard of divine qualities quite different from those I had heard of before, for I lived with the firm conviction that God was a threatening, punishing, and even partial governor somewhere in the universe, and the words, "God is love" (I John 4:16), seemed to me to be only for a privileged few in this world.

Sometime later I suffered great pain, as I had so often done since my childhood. It was a chronic ailment that at times forced me to lie still in bed for weeks. I had an errand to do at the time, but I was so violently overcome with pain that I leaned against the side of a house. Then the discussion came suddenly to mind. I thought over what I had heard and concluded, "If You, good God, really exist, and if You love me, You can heal me right now."

I cannot express in words the wonderful sensation and feeling of unity with God which I experienced. At the same moment I felt a coolness in the part which had pained me so, and suddenly I discovered that I was without pain and moving freely.
