Preexistence and the Eternal Now
What a boon it would be to humanity if the pernicious beliefs of an unhappy past and an uncertain future could be eliminated! Christian Science is this boon, for through its revelation of man's spiritual preexistence, the ghostly beliefs of a material past and a fearful future can be eliminated from consciousness and thus free one to understand and enjoy the eternal now.
Spiritually considered, preexistence denotes infinitely more than merely the antedating of human birth. The man of God's creating has no history of material birth, growth, maturity, and decay. Therefore, in Science, preexistence signifies man's coexistence with God in the changeless eternality of the ever-present here and now. The true understanding of preexistence unfolds in the degree that one repudiates the lie of life and substance as existent in matter and recognizes instead the real man—the spiritual reflection of Life, Truth, and Love.
Mrs. Eddy says of this true sense of being: "Science reverses the evidence of material sense with the spiritual sense that God, Spirit, is the only substance; and that man, His image and likeness, is spiritual, not material. This great Truth does not destroy but substantiates man's identity,—together with his immortality and preexistence, or his spiritual coexistence with his Maker." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 47
