My father and mother took up the study of Christian Science just before I was born. My father was thirty years of age, and several doctors had said that he could not live longer than three months because of a severe stomach condition. His mother had already started to study Science, and at this point my father turned to it too. A practitioner was called, and he was soon healed. He lived a useful life, running his farm until he was sixty-three. He had many healings, including those of rheumatism and a broken bone.

We were a large family of nine children and experienced many demonstrations of the truth. My mother was healed of blood poisoning and a heart condition. My sister also was healed of a heart condition.

Together my mother and I used to study the Lesson-Sermon from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, as outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly, but I did not get much from it. It was just words to me. Later I wondered why it seemed to take the human consciousness so long to grasp the spiritual nature and reality of being. Now I know that it was because I did not spend enough time studying, meditating, and communing with God. My mother used to say to me, "If you would only study more," and I would answer, "I will some day when I need it." If I had only realized how much I did need it!
