It is more than thirty years since I learned of God's goodness through a cursory glance at the Bible and at the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had been under medical care for a kidney complaint for some years, having consulted many doctors, but I was no better. I was feeling pessimistic about recovery. Then one afternoon I turned to the Bible and Science and Health. I cannot remember what I read, nor did I understand anything more than that God is good.

Early the next morning in bed I told myself that since God is good and since I had some good in me, then God must be within me. That was my very thought, and with it came like a flash of light into my consciousness a spiritual angel from divine Love, and I was assured of God's presence, and I was also assured that everything was to be all right.

For a week or two I felt the effects of that spiritual uplift and wanted to share it with others. I had to ask forgiveness for any wrong I had committed, and I loved everyone. I had no idea of what Christian Science was and what it required of me. Our heavenly Father saw me while I "was yet a great way off" (Luke 15:20). There was rejoicing in my heart.
