"What ... God hath joined together"

When the Pharisees questioned Jesus about divorce, he referred to the original account of creation which we know of from the first chapter of Genesis. This was the spiritual creation, in which God made man in His own image and likeness. Jesus said (Mark 10:6–9): "From the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; ... so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asunder."

This statement of the Master's gives the basis upon which a happy marriage can be worked out in Christian Science. And the best time to establish one's thinking on this basis is before marriage when the decision to marry is being made. Beginning with God, the one making the decision can identify himself as God's image, or reflection. Knowing God as Mind, he can find in himself wisdom to look beyond an emotional sense of what is happening, and he can question carefully and weigh intelligently the conditions present in the prospective relationship.

Knowing God as Life, he can find in himself a sensitivity to those things in the relationship which add up to true living. Knowing God as Love, one will demand of himself that he be attracted to those qualities which are eternally lovable. If this attraction is uppermost in one's thought, the experience of learning that temporal joys are insubstantial will be one of harmonious replacement rather than of bitter disillusionment.
