I have always been grateful to my mother for her faithfulness to the teachings of Christian Science. As a girl she was healed through it of a skin disease which covered her face. All medical means had failed to bring relief. In later years she was a Christian Science practitioner for a long period of time.

It was my privilege to attend a Christian Science Sunday School. Here I learned to apply this Science to my every need. The value of understanding and using "the scientific statement of being," found on page 468 of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was made clear to me by a devoted Sunday School teacher. I learned to declare this statement understandingly every night before going to sleep. The truths it contains, including this one, "Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness," led to a protection which enabled me to attend my first eight years of school without a single day's absence.

As a child I worked out many problems alone with God. The first time I received help from a practitioner was during preparation for the eighth-grade state examination, which was of great importance at that time. I walked three miles to the office of the practitioner to request her help. She gave me an appropriate religious article from The Christian Science Monitor to read and said that she would render specific prayerful help on the day of the examination.
