My introduction to Christian Science...
My introduction to Christian Science came at the age of fifteen when an aunt who was then serving as a Reader in a Church of Christ, Scientist, in another province visited us. Sometimes I read the Lesson-Sermon, outlined in the Quarterly, with her and sometimes passages at random from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
I was suffering from a painful sense of self-consciousness and admired my aunt's confidence and poise; I hoped that Science would help me to attain these qualities. After she left, I obtained my own copy of Science and Health. I studied and read it, looking up meanings of words that I did not understand. We lived on a farm, and my only contact with Christian Scientists was through a distant neighbor who would take me to a lecture once a year.
In 1929 I came to work in an office in the city where I now live. Because I would be a stranger in the city, my mother, who was not a Christian Scientist, said to me, "You go to the Christian Science church; you will meet some good people there."
