"He gave them power"

It is recorded in Matthew's Gospel that when Christ Jesus "had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease" (10:1).

What was this power which the Master bestowed? Was it some mysterious force reserved for and conferred on the favored few? Christian Science refutes such an explanation. It maintains, and proves, that this power was a spiritual state of thought which Christian Science has recaptured, the results of which this great Science has succeeded in approximating in the present age. Class teaching in Christian Science equips the pupil to demonstrate in some measure the healing power understood and utilized by Jesus and his disciples.

This might seem to be an extravagant claim if the results were not there to prove it; but they are, in great abundance. When he speaks with power to sin or disease, the Christian Scientist speaks with the authority of Truth, which Christ Jesus had, and he achieves similar results. Perhaps an oversimplified explanation of the chief component of this power is the Scientist's knowledge of the complete allness of God, Soul, Spirit, as well as the complete nothingness of any belief of sin, of disease, or even of death itself.
