Bible Stories Are Fundamental

Mrs. Eddy loved Bible stories. Throughout her books she refers to them repeatedly to emphasize fundamental truths. Sunday School teachers need to be sure their pupils love these stories too. Otherwise, they cannot thoroughly appreciate Mrs. Eddy's writings. Tiny pupils can repeat stories after their teachers and answer questions about them. Slightly older ones are ready to delve further into their meaning and should know them well; then teachers of older classes can use these stories as a basis for advanced lessons.

The following account from a substitute teacher illustrates the depth of love and understanding which fifth graders attained one Sunday:

"I had them read the story of Elisha and his servant, surrounded by horses and chariots of an enemy army (II Kings 6:8-23). We discussed how each one of them could express the same Godlike qualities of intelligence and discernment which enabled Elisha to be called 'the man of God.' They saw that the servant of Elisha expressed less of these qualities and was fearful at first; but when Elisha prayed to have his servant's eyes opened, he too could see God's protecting power.
