In the tenth Chapter of Luke is related that incomparable parable of the Good Samaritan. The principal roles in this little wayside drama are played by a priest, a Levite and "a certain Samaritan." In pointing out the way to gain eternal life Jesus brought into sharp contrast the conduct of the first two men of high conventional virtue and religious authority—one a pillar of the Temple and the other a man dedicated to service in the house of God—with an ostracized stranger in the land. The occasion called imperatively upon the compassion of the three men with its insistent appeal for the succor of the helpless and "half dead" victim of a brutal attack. The first two, of all men, "passed by on the other side."...
Alas, how slowly the leaven of the teaching of Jesus works in the spirit of men. Received with protestations of conversion, acclamations of gladness and hymns of praise, when the demand comes for individual response how many pass by on the other side!
