Serving the Community

A Christian Science Reading Room, well located in the downtown area of a community, has constant opportunities to serve. In Science and Health and her other writings Mrs. Eddy has given the key to the solution of every problem confronting mankind. Let us expect those who are seeking a practical, provable religion to find their way to the doors of our Reading Rooms.

Providing easy accessibility to the teachings of Christian Science is one of the great contributions a branch church can make to its community. Was there ever a more fitting statement of a Reading Room's purpose than the words Christ Jesus used of himself (Luke 22:27), "I am among you as he that serveth"?

A man came into a Reading Room. He had reached a very low ebb in his experience. He had lost his job, and his health was poor. Some months previously he had been in a mental hospital, suffering from a breakdown. Upon finding a Reading Room, he spent several hours there each day. At first he listened to the Talking Books of Science and Health; then he came to the point where he could study quietly. Frequent talks with the librarian encouraged him and reassured him of the power and presence of divine Truth. Gradually he began expressing more and more joy. Within a few weeks he was completely healed of the severe physical difficulties which had caused him pain and sleepless nights. Soon a splendid job opportunity opened for him. His continued progress in Christian Science led to the blessing of class instruction.
