Outgrowing Man-made Doctrines

The world is not outgrowing God as a discarded superstition, as some people contend, nor is it losing its desire for something more substantial than materiality can offer. Instead, it is outgrowing false concepts of God and certain theological doctrines inherited from ages past, doctrines which were often the outcome of hateful controversy and which represented nothing higher than human opinions. Such doctrines are not holy because of their antiquity. The only doctrines to be reverenced are the truths of being, and these must be recognized in the teachings of Christ Jesus.

Rebellion against man-made doctrines is a good sign. It shows that many logical, scientific, searching questioners of today are doing their own thinking and are as ready to abandon false concepts to God and worship as natural scientists are to reject erroneous beliefs about matter and physical phenomena.

Christian Science, discovered and founded by Mary Baker Eddy, fills the need of spiritually dissatisfied humanity. It reveals that Christ Jesus was the master Scientist of all ages, proving with meticulous care each statement he made and demonstrating the power of the divine over the human at every point. The God he worshiped was not a personal or anthropomorphic being, helpless before the laws of matter or unwilling to subdue them, but all-powerful, impersonal Principle, which is Love.
