I am grateful that I have learned through the study of Christian Science that my happiness is not dependent on persons or circumstances; that happiness is a spiritual quality of Truth and Love. In Science and Health our beloved Leader says (p. 60), "Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul."

I learned this beautiful truth after two members of my immediate family passed from my sight within a very few months, and I had seemed to be deprived of the children I wanted. At this time I was much discouraged, saddened, and disheartened because of the severe disappointment. I became ill, and it was impossible for me to move. The pain was severe, and the way seemed very dark. A practitioner was called who came to my home at midnight, spending several hours at my bedside praying.

After she left, a great feeling of warmth surged through my body. At first I became frightened because I had never before experienced that feeling. Then I realized that it was the effect of the warmth of Love coming into my consciousness, making me "every whit whole" (John 7:23), and I had a wonderful sense of love for everyone. The next day I was able to walk and visit the practitioner at her office. The severity of the condition was gone, but it was still difficult for me to walk or move. Further purification of thought was needed.
