I learned of Christian Science...

I learned of Christian Science over forty-five years ago. Though young then, I was ill most of the time, consulting doctors and taking many kinds of medicine, none of which helped me. At a time when I felt a desperate need to be relieved of suffering, someone brought Christian Science to my notice.

There were many spiritual lessons for me to learn, and it was not a quick healing; but the application of the teachings of Science gradually freed me from neurasthenia, stomach trouble, constipation, and tonsillitis. The attacks of the last-named used to be very severe and would keep me in bed many days. Through knowing that Mind, God, governs all, I was also entirely freed from fear of thunderstorms, a fear which had been so extreme that I would be sick for hours when I knew one was expected.

By the time my fourth child was born, I had become a student of Christian Science and had the child at home. A practitioner gave me treatment, and the birth was by far the most harmonious I had ever experienced. I was up in three days instead of being confined to my bed two weeks as I had been before.

More recently I have been healed of what I presume would have been called a carbuncle on my neck. Through the realization that all true growth is spiritual and that there is no life in matter, I gained complete freedom. The carbuncle opened of its own accord, and my neck healed naturally.

It was a long time before I realized that it is spiritual understanding, not just physical healing, that we all need. In this connection I have been much helped by Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 174): "Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised."

I am especially grateful to have had the privilege of helping to establish a Christian Science Society in our city. Church activity has brought me multiple blessings, not the least of which is the inspiration I gain from regular attendance at the services and meetings.

At a time when I had not played a piano or organ for over twenty years, I was asked to play the organ for our group, which was then still meeting informally, for no one else knew how to play. Playing was difficult indeed for me at times, but Mrs. Eddy tells us (ibid., p. 128), "A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man." I endeavored to prove this and served acceptably for over five years.

I am so grateful to God for sending our Saviour, Christ Jesus, into the world and for our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, whose discovery of Christian Science teaches us the way of Life. I have truly learned that neither age nor time can prevent us from knowing the truth which frees us from material beliefs.—(Mrs.) Mary C. Sweatt, Belfast, Maine.
