RADIO PROGRAM No. 108 - You Don't Have to Be Afraid

INTERVIEWER: Fear is a problem that plagues almost all of us at some time or another, In fact, Rev. Arthur Herbert Gray once said: "Fear is probably the commonest trouble with men and women today." Some of the fears he listed were these: fear of unpopularity and poverty, of loneliness and failure. Worst of all, many are afraid without knowing what they are afraid of, he said. The one way of escape, he added, "consists in learning to lean on God."

And yet many people feel that fear is inescapable. How would you, as a Christian Scientist, comment on that?

SPEAKER: I agree that escape from fear is to be found in learning how to lean on God. Fear has its origin in the belief of some form of lack, such as lack of protection or resources. But it is possible to find complete freedom from fear when we understand that right here, right now, we are in the presence of God. When we understand this, we become confident that we have the spiritual resources to lean on in order to be the master of any situation.
