Signs of the Times

The Rev. Dr. Harold Blake Walker in the "Living Faith" column Chicago Tribune, Chicago, Illinois

Scorn is a vicious weapon often used against the worthy habits of our lives. We wilt before its venom and often lose the good for lack of courage. On the other hand, there are those who maintain their own integrity, doing what is worthy as they see it. They stand up to scorn, believing in what somebody called "the importance of being magnificent." Such men and women are strong anchors for those who know them.

Abraham Lincoln was such a solid anchor. One of his contemporaries wrote that despite the scandals that defiled our Civil War, Lincoln stood above them. "The elevation of his mind... is evident.... His spirit dominates everyone." He towered magnificently above the crowd and stood sun-crowned in the grandeur of independent integrity.
