First Church of Christ, Scientist, today announced that dedicatory services will be held in the new edifice at 2nd and Edwards Streets at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday, July 14. Christian Science churches are not dedicated until all expenses involved in building and furnishing the edifice have been fully paid....The dedication services will [include] a brief dedicatory address tracing steps in the history of the local church. The public is invited to attend the services.
Christian Science has been in Springfield now for more than 70 years. Church history records that Gen. Erastus E. Bates met with a group of Springfield people interested in Christian Science on Sunday afternoon, June 28, 1891. General Bates was a student of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Interest in the new religion continued on an informal basis until Feb. 4, 1898, when a Christian Science Society was formed.
