Christian Science has been in Springfield now for more than 70 years. Church history records that Gen. Erastus E. Bates met with a group of Springfield people interested in Christian Science on Sunday afternoon, June 28, 1891. General Bates was a student of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Interest in the new religion continued on an informal basis until Feb. 4, 1898, when a Christian Science Society was formed.
