Since early days men and women have borne burdens—heavy burdens of slavery and of hard physical labor imposed from without. But, figuratively speaking, there can be burdens of another kind altogether—burdens of suffering, of grief and pain, of crushing responsibilities, of poverty and sin, imposed for the most part from within. Such burdens are quite as heavy as any physical burden imposed from without.
