Teaching the Little Ones

In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy states: "Love for God and man is the true incentive in both healing and teaching. Love inspires, illumines, designates, and leads the way" (p. 454).

"In teaching the three-to-five-year-old pupils," one teacher relates, "I found that acknowledging God as the great source of all teaching enabled me to give up a false sense of personal responsibility. This also eliminated any discipline problems."

She writes, "Knowing that the real attraction is the Christ, Truth, the pupils do not need to be amused or entertained. They learn that they come to Sunday School to hear about God. The Bible abounds with wonderful stories that little ones soon learn to love. Since we have so many diversions, such as television, movies, and comics, with all their make-believe, children enjoy even more hearing about something that 'really and truly happened.' The teacher should take care that Bible stories are not just a 'story time.' The stories should illustrate the first lessons in a practical way and be related to the pupil's everyday life. They should stress the Godlike qualities that each story brings out and how the child may also express these qualities.
