Views of Infinity

The trend of natural science is to break down the material limitations which finite thinking has imposed upon the world from the beginning of time. While this liberation appears to be merely human, it hints the order of spiritual existence, or heaven, in which all concepts reflect the one infinite creator, divine Mind. The infinite is asserting its power over the finite, and humanity is groping for an understanding of what is happening and interpreting the appearing of infinity in its own way.

Christ Jesus and prophets before him broke down finite thinking, and they did this by gaining clear views of heaven. They healed the sick and sinful, raised the dead, fed many people with a little food, and overcame binding, natural laws. Christian Science explains these commonly called miracles as instances when spiritually aroused men looked beyond the finite views presented by the physical senses and discerned God's infinite ideas, always apparent to spiritual sense. Spiritual views of creation never change. What is needed is for us to discern them anew, through spiritual sense. Christliness, genuine purity of thought, alone makes this discernment possible.

Limitations of any kind are not inherent in things seen but in the sense we utilize to observe them. Mary Baker Eddy makes many statements which explain this point. Two of them, found in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," read as follows (p. 208): "Material sense defines all things materially, and has a finite sense of the infinite," and (p. 255), "In league with material sense, mortals take limited views of all things."
