A College Student Writes

"The wakeful shepherd"

On the first page of the Preface to Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes, "The wakeful shepherd beholds the first faint morning beams, ere cometh the full radiance of a risen day." It is the privilege of Christian Scientists on college campuses throughout the world, whatever their course of study, to act as wakeful shepherds, that is, to discern in the material used in their inquiries "the first faint morning beams" of the "risen day" of Christian Science.

This Science teaches that the second coming of the Christ has occurred, for in Mrs. Eddy's discovery of Christian Science God revealed Himself fully and finally to men. Because Science has come to human consciousness, it is substantively present to be grasped by men at various stages of development although this revelation has been given full statement in Science and Health. As a result of this second coming of the Christ, God's ideal, to human consciousness, old forms have been broken up, a new level of sensibility has been established, and the true sense of Church, government, law, Science, and art has appeared.

Christ Jesus said to the materially-minded Pharisees and Sadducees, "O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?" (Matt. 16:3.) Let us be sure that we are awake to the signs of the times, because the alert Christian Scientist, perhaps more than anyone else, is in a position to understand the changes that have come about in human consciousness; he knows what has produced them and where their real significance lies.
