My first healing in Christian Science ...
My first healing in Christian Science lifted me out of much suffering and on to a better life. I had low blood pressure, and I dreaded the summers because the symptoms were aggravated at that time. I had been going to different doctors, but had gained no relief. Then I went to my family doctor, who, after giving me all kinds of tests, said I was all right organically but that I needed to stop worrying, and I would have to find the way to do that.
So all that week on the road —I was traveling at the time— I prayed to God to lead me to the right means; and as I was approaching home on Friday night it came to me to try Christian Science. As soon as I got in, I called a Christian Science practitioner and made an appointment for Saturday morning. I spent a very pleasant two hours with him, and as I was about to leave, he said I had something to do. I asked him what it was, and he said I should obtain a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy and read it and come back to see him the next Saturday.
I went to the nearest Christian Science Reading Room and bought the book and spent every evening reading it. The terms were foreign to me, and I seemed to understand nothing of what I was reading. But I thought that if I became familiar with its phraseology, I would be able to get something out of it; so I persevered, for I wanted to get well.
I kept reading and pondering what I was reading and making regular visits to the practitioner once a week, and in about two months' time I was healed. The smoking habit of long duration and indigestion were also healed.
This helped me to see that if I would daily study the Lesson-Sermon, given in the Christian Science Quarterly, more understanding would come and still greater blessings. So I never let a day pass without reading part or all of the lesson; but my main concern was still my business.
I was engaged in a specialty contracting business. My work was outside and covered two states. I had been in this business for about sixteen years and had had some years that were very profitable, as well as some that were not.
Then several years ago the winter turned cold and stayed that way for several months, and when it did warm up so that we could work, it set in to rain. I exhausted all my resources and lost all my equipment. I had no place to turn for financial aid, for I owed money to the banks and could not go to them; so in my extremity I turned to God. Although I had had physical healings in Christian Science, I had not been able to turn my business over to Him.
I prayed and studied all the more, because we could not get out to do any work. I told God I had tried every material method I knew and was now ready and willing to turn everything over to Him. He would have to show me what to do. I read the Bible and Science and Health consistently every day, striving to be obedient to the best of my ability to the truths I was learning. Although my progress seemed very slow, I knew I was gaining a better understanding of God and of my relationship to Him.
Small jobs began to come to me that I could do without having to invest in too much equipment. As I was faithful to my study, more of the truth it was teaching me unfolded, and I trained a truer sense of man's supply as coming from God.
In about three months' time I was doing a satisfactory business. Although the operation was much smaller than formerly, the profit was good, and I was happy in my work.
As the winter months were approaching, I was confronted again with the weather problem. I earnestly turned to God for guidance. The idea came to me to go south to a milder climate. I was able to finish all my contracts within a short time, and I took what equipment I had and left for a southern state with the idea of following the same line of business.
I took all the human footsteps possible to establish the same line of business; but my efforts were of no avail. I spent much time praying and studying, striving daily to be divinely led.
Through ideas that came to me, and the contacts that they brought, I was led into an entirely different line of work, which has enabled me to use my talents in a larger measure and in a less laborious way, and it has given me a greater sense of accomplishment and success.
I should like to say that the Lesson-Sermon has been a great bulwark for me in solving daily problems and is always read before I begin my day's work. God has wonderfully blessed me in many ways; and I find that when I stay with Him, He never forsakes me, and He guides me in all my ways.
I am profoundly grateful for Christ Jesus, for Christian Science and Mrs. Eddy, its Discoverer and founder, and for what it has done for me and is doing for all mankind.—Robert F. Hull, Winter Park, Florida.
